it saves me money for sure, i harvested over 150 pounds of tomatoes last year and at least that much zucchini and there is a good 5 pounds of pea's in my refer right now. if i did not grow i wouldn't be eating that much tomatoe/zuch's but i would be eating something else and PAYING for it.

Is gardening really cheaper?

After my experience(removing a rock quarry and bermuda terf) this spring starting a new garden, I say no way. I'm sure an established garden with an experienced keeper may find a way to make it worthwhile, but for me it is the experience and fresh food that keeps me interested.

Gardening can be a terrific stress reducer which adds to it's value in an indirect way...cheaper than doctor visits, prescriptions with potential side effects. The long term bonus will be fresh from the land produce and herbs.
You've already tilled and installed an irrigation system so I wonder if DW would be willing to take over the planting, waterings, weeding - nurturing food production and harvest.

It definitely doesn't have to be expensive. Be resourceful. You don't have to buy a whole bunch of stuff to grow some decent food.
There are a million different items marketed to gardeners claiming that they are a must have to be a successful gardener, but most of them are not needed or may even do more harm than good.

The cost would mainly depend on the style you wanted to have. As per cost depend on the materials you wanted to used and have in your garden. To avoid further expense if you can do it yourself have some research on how then better, but if not then get in touch with professionals to assist or do it for you.
