  • Transferring bookmarks

Why don't they have something in place (or do they?) that allows you to transfer all of your bookmarked websites from one computer to another?

I may be getting a new computer in the near future and the idea of losing all the bookmarks I have (+100) is totally frustrating. Granted, I probably don't need nor visit about half of them anymore, but there's a substantial amount I would want to keep and don't have the time or patience to copy them all just to transfer them to a new computer.

Is there any way to transfer them using IE? You would think they would have something where you could "sign in" and they would show up regardless of what computer you're using. I'm not totally computer savvy so maybe it's impossible to do but it would be a nice feature.

How to transfer favorites to another PC | PC Memoirs

I've personally never tried it, so don't know if it will work. But it's worth a shot!

Thanks jpg. Forunately I don't think (hope) I'll be needing a computer too soon but when I do I'd hate to lose all the bookmarks.

I don't remember exactly, but I believe Google has this functionality through your iGoogle page (if you have a google account)... It's basically a 'gadget' that you add to your iGoogle, and it keeps all of your bookmarks in one place for you. Probably not quite what you're after, but it'll at least save them all somewhere besides your computer.

Alternately, I'd recommend just saving (copying) your entire 'Favorites' folder onto your external hard drive (the one that you hopefully use periodically to back up all of your data ) If something happens to your current computer, all you have to do at that point is import them into IE (or whatever browser you use), which is very easy.

I don't use IE, but for Firefox there is an app called Xmarks which automatically backs up all of your bookmarks and you can access it from any computer. It may work for IE as well. There are also a number of websites that do something similar ... one I used before was called backlinks??? or something like that.

ETA - Can't believe I didn't mention Diigo!! This is a fantastic way to save your bookmarks across applications. You can organize them into categories, tag them, etc. You also can save snippets of text or screenshots (and tag them to find later.)

just copy the favorites folder located on your computer to a thumb drive and transfer them to the new machine.

open my computer, right click C: go to properties, documents and settings or users, locate your username, you'll see a favorites folder with all of your bookmarks. copy that to new machine to same location.

            this is for IE.

Thank you all for the help. I exported my favorites to a file and saved them on a flash. I also finally got around to saving some other things on there too. Procrastination can be a b*^ch

Again, I don't expect my computer to go kaput any time soon but you never know. I know my luck and one day the thing just won't boot up and I'd be kicking myself for not backing stuff up. Thanks again.

I can really recommend Delicious.com for saving, sharing and discovering booksmarks. It is similar to Diigo. That way you have booksmarks accessible from anywhere, and there is an excellent Firefox extension for Delicious

Most browsers will allow you to backup your bookmarks to a hard drive location from the old computer. You can then restore those backups to your browser at the new location.
