how much does it cost you to work?

I drive about 100 mi/day round trip, 5 days a week. I drive a 5-speed Ford Escort which will cruise at 75 all day long and gets about 36-38 MPG. I paid $3.70 the last time I filled up, so that's about $50/wk or $10/day. I don't count insurance costs since I'd have to pay that anyway regardless of work (you need a car where I live).
I average between $150-250/yr in parts for repairs (I do my own work). The car has 160k miles on it and I have a spare engine sitting in my garage for when it's needed. I had another Escort which was wrecked in an accident. The other drivers insurance paid my exact cost for the car, plus I negotiated to get the car back for free (no salvage cost) and stripped it of parts. I also only buy parts with lifetime warranties (usually from Autozone).
I wonder if I win the most frugal car owner award

Interesting thread.
I walk to work, so no commuting costs there.
I usually bring my lunch, but sometimes I buy. Like someone else said - I would eat even if I wasn't at work, and sometimes I will go out to eat.
I also make more than $16/hr, though I'm salaried, so there are probably days/weeks I make about that (ex: usually when I'm traveling for work; going to a conference where I have client meetings breakfast/lunch/dinner).

* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

BTW, his signature says he is worth $300k. Is $300k the new gazillionaire?

Hi,
I live in the UK so the answer is a hell of a lot! There are a lot of public pensions and social security benefits to pay for!
The answer for me is combined tax of about 35% (not including sales tax (VAT) at 20% and commuting costs of £250 per month. There is also the local government tax at £100/month

12 mile commute roundtrip, so around $2 for gas/day
Lunch is my one weakness and I can't shake the habit: $8-10
Daycare: $30/day (it's cheap compared to most areas).
So I'm netting a substantial portion of my daily wage. It's actually part of the philosophy that we established for our household: keep "overhead" low and don't get into long-term paying commitments (like car payments) (and aside from marriage itself). House payments will be acceptable when we get there.
