  • Finally tried Redbox

I tried Redbox out this week (I know. I don't get out very often. ). It has exceeded my expectations.
I really enjoy watching films that have been nominated for Oscars. Rango and Kung Fu Panda2 had been playing at a nearby theater with admission $4.00 ($2.00 on Tuesdays), but $1.26 is way better!

There is a promo code that is good for a free rental on Valentines Day on the Redbox.com website.

We use Redbox all the time. If you have a smartphone, find the redbox app and you can reserve the movie, show up and swipe your card and be on your way. Also, if you look hard enough, there are lots of promo codes available.

Much better than paying $$$$$ to go see a movie these days.

      nck4857,
Thanks for the tip. I've added the AP to my phone.

I love Redbox! And Blockbuster Express too... If you subscribe to flash sale sites (i.e. Groupon, Living Social, etc), watch out for Redbox or BE, they frequently have deals!

I've never used Redbox because it basically has the same problem as video stores always had. You need to go there to get the movie and go there to return the movie. I love Netflix because I don't have to do either. I also don't have to plan ahead when I'm going to want to see a movie. We never know when we're going to have a free night so it's nice to have a couple of movies waiting to be watched as well as the on-demand stuff both from Netflix and from Comcast.

I'll have to look into Groupon. I keep hearing about it, but so far I haven't tried it out.

I have to upgrade our wifi network, right now I can stream video content faster on the 3G network than using our Wifi. (It's going to be an all day affair to upgrade to FIOS --my goal is to upgrade soon ) So, the on demand content is going to have to wait.
I never tried Redbox before because I am not a fan of shopping (DH does the shopping and he is very good about only buying what is on the list) so like you say--it wasn't convenient. The Oscar Award show coming up motivated me to try Redbox because I didn't want to buy the DVDs. Now that I am retired I can take a 2mile walk up to the store to pick up a DVD and get my exercise. Another 2 mile walk to return--it is Win-Win.

The thing that is nice about redbox is the fact that you can find one just about anywhere. There is probably 6 or 8 of them within 10 minutes of my house.

I use DVDExpress on occasion (like Red Box but different brand) when something new comes out that I really would like to see and I know I have time to watch it that night. There is one in the grocery store six blocks from my house so if I'm not going by it again the next day the kids will just walk down and turn it in. I have Netflix, but I'm usually in the middle of a series and don't want to interupt it for one movie, so it's a nice option to have.

I am amazed at how many there are. Another convenient feature is you can return your rental is any redbox.

Redbox is great if you dont mind the travelling there to get and take back the movies. You can also rent PS3 and Xbox games in some of them which are $2 per day. Only thing I dont like is if you reserve a movie ahead of time using your smartphone app when the movie is available you have to get it that day. My wife reserved a movie I was hoping to watch it on a friday night but it became available on Thursday night so we had to get it then.

That's good to know. I didn't know you could reserve it more than a day in advance. I love to be able to search the inventory of a particular kiosk in advance. DH and I were coming home from watching Oscar Shorts Live Action and Oscar Shorts Animation (that was over 3 hours of viewing ) at the movie theater last Friday and decided we had time to watch one more movie. So, on our drive home I found Jane Eyre. I reserved it using my iPhone and we picked the DVD up with a swipe of the CC. It was very convenient.

( Off-topic, but the Oscsr Shorts Live Action were extra awesome this year. )

I love Redbox, it has so many convenient locations, one is right next to my gym at Fred Meyer so I just walk over and return it before 9 when I go to the gym. Yeah, there are always a lot of promo codes so 1/2 of the time I don't even pay for my rentals.

We have a Redbox that is a 3min walk from my house so returning the dvd got delegated to my teenage daughter. I don't watch movies often enough to subscribe to netflix. But I wanted to watch the movie "the help" and happened to notice it was at the redbox so tried it. I like it for my twice a year movie habit.

Redbox is great because you can watch movies that came out recently and not pay theater prices! I prefer to spend less than $2 for a movie the whole family can enjoy, than go to the local movie theater were I know we will spend at least $30 for entrance, PLUS snacks. We have 4 Redbox locations within 4 to 5 blocks. Pretty convenient.
