  • cashing in?

I have a no-interest plan until 11-08-2012. In order to pay this off and not pay a bunch of interest I'll need to pay $200.00 a month until then. This is going to be really hard to do for I'm strapped with alot of bills at this time. My question is this: Do I cash in some Series EE savings bonds in order to pay off the balance now? A majority of these bonds are $50.00 with interest at 1.77%. These were issued to me back in 1999. Final maturity on most of these bonds will be in the year 2034 and 2029. I do have one bond given to me in 1982 for $50.00, it's worth $144.02 as of today. Whats with this? Are these kind of bonds really worth keeping? Any help would really be appreciated. Thank You

Whether or not the bonds are worth keeping depends on what you are comparing to. If it is a choice of 1.77% interest or 20+% interest once the 0% deal ends, I'd say that's a no-brainer. Sell the bonds and pay off the debt.

What type of debt is this? Do you have anything else you could sell to pay it off?

      Steve,
The debt is from a credit card and there is nothing that I'm willing to sell. These bonds are confusing to me. They don't seem like a good investment.
Thanks Steve for the quick advise, Quint

1.77% tax-deferred until you redeem them on a government-guaranteed investment is a pretty good deal today.

I've 10 months to get this paid. I think we'll be able to figure out how to get it paid off with out cashing in.
