wow I never knew people did this. I know you tip your room service like when they bring food but I had no idea about this. I've been staying at a Hilton every year and haven't done this. I need to now, I feel bad.

The ones who work at the lower class hotels probably deserve it more than those who work at upscale hotels.

If I'm staying more than 1 night I always leave something, if only $1-$2. Not so much to reward them, but as theft deterrent. Seriously...

          Don’t tip…sadly can’t afford it.

If you can afford to vacation in a hotel, you should be able to afford to tip a dollar or two to the staff.

            * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.

I don't typically leave a tip in Canada or the US. However when traveling to Mexico we've always left a lump sum at the end of the stay.

I tip each day - about $2-$3. I figure if I'm staying several nights, why should the person that's cleaning on the particular day I leave get the full tip (they might have been off work for the week before that and this is their first day on my room)? This way it guarantees that the person cleaning the room each day is the one that gets the tip each day. Also, gives them incentive to do a good job each day (if it is the same person they know there will be a decent tip).

Exactly. These people are relying on their tips to get by. Most hotel cleaners don't make high wages. I consider this to be part of the cost of my trip.

In my adult years as a traveler, I've almost never seen a tip envelope. It just seems to be a practice that fell out of favor. I'm not sure how I would leave a tip. You can't just leave cash on the dresser because housekeeping shouldn't be touching that. I guess you could leave a little note but then you are depending on the person speaking/reading English which is not such a great assumption in many places.

For those that do tip, how exactly do you leave that tip? Do you bring your own envelopes, leave a note or just hand it to the person when you encounter them in the hall?

And yes, this is always an issue of debate on the Disney board.
I leave it on a little note that says something like "cleaner". I always leave it in a wayt that it's obvious to them it's a tip.
