Curious about insurance?

Hello Everyone..

I need health care. I'm 21 years old. My parents insurance is Cigna, however I've been to counseling/therapy before and my parents think its BS. I still think I need it. If I saw a good doctor using their insurance, as well as for medication if necessary, would they be able to find out?

Yes. If you are on their policy, they receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) form for every charge submitted to the insurance company. So when you see the therapist, an EOB would result. When you filled a prescription, an EOB would result.

If you don't want your parents to know about your medical treatments, you need to get your own health insurance policy.

It depends on the policy. With our insurance, once my son turned 18 the insurance company wouldn't talk to me unless he gave them permission. I thought it was weird since it was our policy he was on and i pay the bill.

With ours, I can see all the EOBs for everyone, but with our Rx insurance, I couldn't even see anything about my husband until he officially gave me permission. I'm surprised that privacy isn't more uniformly enforced among insurance policies, but it obviously is not.
