  • turbotax deluxe vs premier

My taxes are generally pretty straight forward. I usually buy turbotax deluxe with state.
However, last year before I retired I did a financial makeover to simplify finances. I sold off several odd-lot DRIP stocks that DH and I held. (I took the proceeds and put them into a target retirement fund so that it would be easier for me to keep track of things ).

We don't have any rental properties or any business stuff--the main reason I would spend the extra money on Premier is to figure the cost basis for the stock sales (in the past I have just used an excel spreadsheet to calculate the cost basis).

Has anyone used the Premier version? Is it worth the extra money for what I'm trying to accomplish or does it just add an unnecessary level of complexity to the Turbotax interview process?

I always use Premier. Gets me the deduction finder, and you can auto-import your brokerage info. Helpful if you hate reading through your 1099's, and super helpful if you use multiple brokerages.

Essentially, all I had to do was input my brokerage login info, and click 'import' - TurboTax pulled all the info straight from the brokerage sites for me. Really easy IMO.

Oh and make sure you look for TurboTax discounts. Fidelity does like 25% off (Do Your Taxes - Fidelity) and my capital one card does the same (http://www.capitalone.com/lp/card/turbotax/index.php).

I'm sure there are other discounts out there.

I use deluxe to file a return that includes a schedule c and it is pretty straight forward. I used premier the first year I had to file a sched c a didn't really see the benefit in subsequent years. I've also been able to import from my financial institution and track basis using deluxe.
