Quite a few people here seem to think so. Interesting times ahead.

If most people realized how many things we really use oil for beyond transportation, they would really be stressed out. We probably won't run out of oil for a very long time. There is quite alot of it. What we will run out of is cheap oil. The easy to extract oil that modern society has been built upon will gradually disappear, leaving us with more expensive alternatives like Canada's oil sands and shale.

Oil is used for things such as plastic. Think for a minute about how many consumer products contain plastic. You'll realize it's almost all of them. Imagine the cost of plastic increasing 250 - 500%. It's rather frightening. We will develop transportation alternatives that reduce the use of oil per passanger mile traveled to far below today's levels, but we better do it without petrochemical based plastic.

The next few years will certainly prove interesting as there are an awful lot of very dire predictions out there regarding oil and the availability of it.
