A) I have a friend who had to move into a state paid nursing home, earlier in life than one might expect. Some years previously, she had seen the health crisis brewing, and sold her house to move to something simpler, hoping she'd have money to hire a bit of help and purchase physical aids as needed. (Well before the housing crash.) For reasons she has not explained to me, she gave the cash to her son for safe keeping. The son spent the money and cut contact with his mother! Eventually, she could not take care of herself and had to go into a Medicare + Medicaid paid facility.
B) Another friend told me that her brother had sold his house in order to pay for a surgery for their father. This was in a country where payment was needed upfront. No pay; no surgery. The son, with his own young son, had to move in with other family.
What a contrast. One son took all. One son gave all.
