    We will be keeping it.

We are ditching our satellite service, so this is still by far the cheaper option.

As far as using RedBox vs. Netflix DVDs, we rarely get movies. We rent documentaries and TV series', which Redbox doesn't have.

I don't mind really waiting for movies to arrive because they come quickly from a city close to me. However, what I don't like is how greedy the owners of Netflix are getting. I thought I read in the WSJ that their profit margins had gone up something like 87% BEFORE they instituted the increase. Anyway, I will definitely dump Netflix over the next 1-2 months before the price hike takes effect Sep. 1 for current users (not new people signing up!).

The key is nothing changes until Sept. 1 so there's no point in changing anything now if you are satisfied with your plan.

After Sept 1st, we're downgrading from 3 movies to 2 with unlimited streaming.

I will prob switch to the DVD only plan. Streaming selection is lousy at this time--mostly bad or obscure movies.

When I received the Netflix e-mail regarding the price & service change, I downgraded to DVDs only 5 at a time. I never used the streaming service, and almost all my television habit is DVD watching -- movies, music, documentaries, & certain TV shows. I can't beat Netflix for the variety, and obscure films I seek out. The price is lower than the old 5 at a time rate, before their recent price increase, so I'm happy with the change.

I think Netflix provides a good value, but it depends on what you watch and how you want to watch it.

Netflix is finally getting some pricing power. A long time ago, I could call them, complain about the price, and get a lower rate. I tried to do it again a few months ago, when they increased the cost of my plan, but they would not budge on pricing, and were willing to lose my business.

The future, of course, will be streaming, and I'm glad it will be a competitive market. If you think Netflix is bad for price gouging, look at the gross margins in the cable industry.

We've been using Netflix pretty much since it was created. I think in that time it has only gone up twice in price (maybe three times) and it's been many years, so I'm not really that surprised or outraged. Postage has gone up quite a bit more often than that during that time period. Our plan is going up by $4 a month. I still consider them a good value, but we will be dropping from 4 out (one for each of us) to 2 out, plus streaming in September. We would do this anyway, because the kids have too much homework during the school year to watch DVD's. We have had excellent streaming service and my family loves documentaries and old shows like Mission Impossible which are available that way. They release new stuff to streaming every month, too. I suppose if they are going to acquire the licenses to stream a bunch of new stuff they will need to have the money to do that, like any business would.

I've decided to stick with with the "1 DVD at-a-time plus streaming" plan for now. It's a pretty good bargain based on my usage (although sometimes I keep the DVDs longer than I should due to laziness), and the various alternatives I've investigated are either more expensive or lacking in content or convenience. I remember when I first signed up for Netflix many years ago, there was no streaming and the 3 DVD at-a-time plan was like $21 a month... so I think streaming + DVD for $16 seems reasonable. I may reconsider this, though, if in 6-12 months they haven't beefed up their streaming catalog substantially like they said they would.

It's a little more difficult but I'm just going to go with free services like Hulu once September rolls around. My TV has an adapter to hook up my laptop to use as a monitor so it will be like the same thing. Even though the selection will be smaller I think I'll get by. Also a little tip, for RedBox or the new Blockbuster terminals, it's usually possible to find promo codes online that you can enter in. It may take a couple tries to find the right one but with some persistence you can save yourself that $1 :P

I don't have the attention span to watch movies on my computer (I always end up surfing the internet) and when I get a movie from Netflix, I usually have it 2-3 weeks before I get around to watching it. The price increase was enough for me to make the decision to cancel my account.

Definitely not worth it if your turn around is 2-3 weeks. If I were you, I would wait until the very last minute when you decide you want to watch it then run to the grocery store and use Redbox or Blockbuster terminals.

We don't watch them on the computer. We watch them on our TV. We can stream Netflix through the Wii. I believe you can also do it with Xbox or Playstation, not sure which one. Or you can get Apple TV or Roku for about $99 and use that. No reason to do it on the computer, though our computer has a great 21" widescreen and I do watch TV shows on there without a problem.

                            getting rid of netflix

I have netflix and I'm actually thinking of getting rid of it myself. The bandwith and connection is poor. Yes it's cheap but for the basic package I don't think it's worth it. The havea hard time updating their movies as well.

I have the streaming only and haven't gotten any emails about a price increase, so I'll stick with it. I don't mind the lack of brand-new movies as I typically use it only when there's nothing on TV. If the price for streaming only goes up too much then it will be gone.

I did get an email from them this morning saying that movies were unavailable for streaming yesterday and offering a 3% credit (woo hoo...a whole $.25 off my next bill). So check your email for that one if you have streaming service.

Since the recent announcement that the monthly fee will be doubled and will NOT include DVD's, I cancelled my account. I will stick to Redbox and Blockbuster Express rentals for now.
