  • Do you tip the guys who carry out

your groceries. Due to medical problems both my mother and I avail ourselves of this services. We are widows and have limited income.
I did have a neighbor who worked at Krogers say not to tip as they were paid good money.

I think it depends on the grocery store, how often you use the service, and whether you're a regular. Ask the manager. The couple of times I needed the help and tried to tip the guys they told me that they are being paid and that it wasn't necessary.

All grocery workers don't necessarily make a decent income (my boy worked as a courtesy clerk for 4 1/2 years and barely made more than minimum wage. That being said, if a store offers carry out, that is part of their service. I never tip the carry out guy. I think my son got a tip only once or twice in all those years.

I personally think our nation has become tip crazy. I decided this when I was at a brownie stand and they had a cup for tips. Tips! Excuse me, but all they did was put the brownie in a bag and charge me an exorbitant price. The transaction took less than a minute. Nothing special was done, and I assume the owner was paying this person to man the register. Tip means To Insure Promptness. It is gratuity to help insure exceptional service, yet lately everyone and their brother seems to expect a tip for doing what they are paid to do in the first place.

      I will quit ranting now!

I've been seeing the same thing with the tip cups. Occasionally for lunch I go to this Italian carry-out joint. The guy at the counter drops a slice of pizza in a bag and expects a tip? It's particularly annoying because when he gives people their change, he not-so-subtlely shakes the tip cup.

I worked part time in a furniture dept and part of the job was helping customers load the furniture into or onto their cars. I never asked for a tip, but I'd say about 20-25% of the customers I helped would throw us a few bucks. I didn't feel slighted by those who didn't tip, but after lugging a dresser or crib out of the back and into someone's car for them, I certainly appreciated the tips I did get.

I rarely use this service at a regular grocery store but when I have I did not tip, just thanked them. When we go to a military commissary, we buy a lot (stockup) and they do carry them out. We have been told that tips are their only income there so we do tip them.
