We have several of them. We vacationed last year at Branson, MO and their theme park (Silver Dollar City) was celebrating its 50th anniversary. As part of the celebration, they were giving these coins back as change from in-park purchases. (Not silver dollars like the name of the park, but coin dollars at least). It was great! When the kids made souvenir purchases and got them back as change, they loved them and decided they wanted to keep them. So, for the first time ever, they didn't spend their entire budgets on junk that has long since been lost, trashed or otherwise forgotten!

Canada switched from $1. paper to coin in 1987 and it has been said to save $250 million. The gov`t wants to reduce spending but the public rejects change. I still have a boxful of JFK half dollars and there was no uproar when they were produced. I`m guessing there are 2 million of these in boxes all over the world. I think there is also a box of silver dollars cast for various presidents with DH's coin collection. Were these cast for collectors or were they in general service?

I'm not aware of any presidential silver dollars. Those may have just been commemorative coins, not actual circulating legal tender.
The public does resist change. That's why I said the only way to get rid of the dollar bill and get people to use a dollar coin is to force the issue. Stop producing the bills.Steve
