  • Car insurance minimums raised for Houston....

Apparently car insurance minimums have been raised for Houston. Will new rates be automatically adjusted at renewal or do you need to contact your car insurance company and ask them to make the necessary changes in your policy?

The minimum Bodily Injury liability has been increased from $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident to $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident for all of Texas, not just Houston.

I'm sure your coverage will increase automatically at your renewal without you having to request it, but I recommend calling your agent or insurance company to discuss it.

Even with the increase, the coverage is too low if your are involved in an accident. You should contact your insurance company and discuss higher limits. It does not cost much to increase your liability for better protection, and many insurance companies give you a lower rate for carrying higher liability on your old policy when you shop for lower rates.

I didn't read the article but I think if it is a state mandated change with a specific date to have it done by you insurance company is supposed to do it and send you an updated additional bill to advise you. I know where I work at they had a change in insurance here and the company sent a bill and a letter that said due to blah blah blah we have adjusted these coverages and your new rates and retro bill are included. I do not work in Texas btw.
