What does your SO want for Valentines? Thoughtfulness! Monday, February 14, Valentines. DH and I don't buy into the overpriced hype of Valentine's Day with prices ratcheted up for flowers, overcrowded, noisy, restaurants, and poor quality chocolate on a shelf in every drug store. If you start early, you can have fun with the planning, the execution and delivery.
You can find all sorts of stuff on-line, at the grocery store, the Patisserie/bakery, at the Dollar Store, Rock/Craft place, Pawn Shop [no longer a dingy nightmare], in charity shops, even free cycle. No need to drill holes in the budget for a bouquet of roses when one rose in a vase snagged from home will get the reaction you want if it is accompanied with a note that says..."You are my One and Only." Those tiny, miniature rose plants from the grocery store are a great alternative if you have a garden. Plant them outdoors in the spring and enjoy them for years.
Don't break the bank for a gift. Cinnamon hearts in a beautiful coffee mug & Hershey's Red Kisses, A calendar with Romantic Sayings/poems [they're on sale], small box of best quality dark chocolate, Raspberry Chocolate Coffee beans, a CD of love songs you've compiled. The Dollar store offers aisles of something red like Cinnamon candy, red jello, fuzzy winter gloves, cordial cherry chocolates, liquid soap, bouquet of balloons and many pens, pencils & notebooks. This isn't the year to buy anything gold or silver unless it's shares in production. The Rock shop sells semi precious stones [from rock] and many also sell the 'findings' [silver/gold colored metal shapes to make them wearable earrings, necklaces, broaches, bracelets etc. Putting them together can be fun and creative. If you've never been to a pawn shop, it might be a worthwhile experience on the buying side for those who planned to be spendy.
I suggest avoiding restaurants and make something special. For guys who can't/won't cook...a box of frozen waffles,a lg. sized heart shaped cookie cutter, strawberries and Redi Whip cream combine in a Breakfast for Dinner meal. If you like add inexpensive, Vina Los VascosSauvignon Blanc or a special, flavored tea. Since you could make it a whole weekend celebration 2011, go for a stroll through your local farmer's market for something to roast and two perfect pastries from the Euro baker on site. Keep the budget in line with a rotisserie chicken from the grocery supported with veggies from the market & red jello.
Easy peasy to plan the entertainment with a chick flick like Julie & Julia, but remember to plan for snacks, turn off the phones and turn down the lights. If you don't mind trading effort for $$$ create a Home Spa. That needs candles, towels, bubble bath and pleasant smelling lotions. You get extra points for using an old lipstick to write a romantic note on the mirror. Have you ever enjoyed an At Home vacation? Check-out the wonderful, inexpensive entertainment listed on your "What's happening" in your community entertainment guide for your favorites. Go for a romantic walk and see what visitors to your city enjoy.
