We were one of the last people around to get cable TV. We did it 2-3 years ago. The only reason I did it then was that I learned about the limited basic cable package for $10/month. I was willing to spring for ten bucks but not 50 or 100 that I hear so many people talk about.
Anyway, the day they installed cable, we were getting a bunch of channels that aren't part of the $10 package. The tech said that often happens and those channels would probably disappear in a week or two. Well, they never did, and I certainly wasn't going to call and complain. All this time, we've been enjoying the full cable package, including HBO, but only paying $10/month.
Fast forward to 12/1. Comcast converts their entire network to digital (we were still analog). In order to receive any channels now, you need a digital converter box. I get the box, hook it up and voila, we are down to the handful of channels we are supposed to have with the $10 package. Some progress that was (though the picture is much clearer).
The next package up for the $10 one is $62/month - nothing in between. They do have a deal for $29/month but only for new customers (which I'm sure they'll give me if I call and argue).
Two problems:
1. I don't want to pay $30/month to watch TV.
2. Since losing all of the other channels, we are all watching much less TV because there is rarely anything on the channels that we do get. And we are surviving. My daughter even admitted (not an easy task for a teenager) that she is spending a lot less time watching TV.
We've supplemented by watching more stuff through streaming on Netflix and DD has been watching Star Trek episodes on IMDB on the computer.
If it were totally up to me, I wouldn't upgrade, and I'm going to drag my feet as long as I can before I do so, but I know DW and DD would like to have the other channels back. I just hate to purposely do something that I know will result in us watching more TV.
What say you?
