Student loans leave crushing debt burden - Business - CNBC TV - msnbc.com

What I find ironic about all this discussion is the way our government (and not just Obama. . .Bush. . .Clinton. . .Bush) just assume that more (college) education is the answer for America.

It's like. . .we are falling behind Asian countries with regards to our students and test scores. . .we obviously need to invest in more education. Slam dunk, right?

I know education is an Index of Quality of Living. The countries with the highest standard of living actually factor in an educated populace into that standard (along with security). And it's those intangibles that a college delivers that aren't easily replacable:

    1. Critical thinking
    2. Appreciation of the scientific method
    3. Advanced literacy.

Still, if the average debt is $24,000, I am not too concerned either. That's about the cost of a new car and I think an education is money better spent. The tipping point? About 40K to me.

I know Bill Gates had an initiative to totally revamp our educational system (primary and up). . .it does seem like we could evolve past brick and mortar colleges for at least half of college educations. Yes, you still need some amount of presence on a campus for some classes - laboratory I can think of, perhaps public speaking and other classes I am not thinking of . . .I don't know.

Every time we mix it up with China on Human Rights, they are quick to point out that America saddles kids with slavery-like debt.

    Too-shay.
