    Jeffrey,

What people have said is fine for a single person, but one of the major issues I've found in trying to educate, is the complaint of the SO.

Many people have SOs that (unfortunately) have somewhat distanced themselves in what the so called "bill payer" or "money manager" in their setup, is trying to do.

Some do not, but some of us do.

Therefore, I would suggest that 1st should be to definitely try to "plan with" the SO, and not try to do it alone.

Get agreement, ask for help, have the SO do the bills every so often, etc. as much as is possible.... it should build some comfort and understanding about the reality of each families' situation.

hmmmm, took a look at what david wrote and his slow money movement isn't exactly I had in mind -- looks like I'll need to find another name for what I am thinking so there isn't any confusion. Any suggestions?

          How about:

-Not your typical get rich quick scheme-
          -Steady Growth-
-The Tortoise's Guide to Money Management- (referring to the tortoise and the hare)
-Slow and Steady Wins the Race- (feel free to insert any financial word before race, '401k race', 'Net Worth race', etc.)
-Money Management: It doesn't have to be quick to work-
-SlowDown: The Consistent Plan to Building Wealth-

That's a start And if you start selling programs with any of those names, I want some royalties!

I agree. It sounds like you are going more for a basic financial literacy type of program.

If someone were to put together a "Slow Money Movement" (the opposite of get rich quick) to show people how to get back to financial basics, what do you feel would be essential to make it work?

The basic framework is "live within your means"
To me, financial basics implies teaching budgeting, balancing a checkbook, reading a bank statement and the basics of investing. The Slow Money thing sounds more like an investment routine for folks who already have all of the basics taken care of and are moving forward with the next step for the long-term plan.

As I said earlier, you need to clarify and focus on who your target audience is.
            Steve

            * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
            * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
            * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Spend less than you earn. Saving a little is better than saving nothing. Every penny does matter.

I began my journey to financial independence over 20 years ago. My first concrete step was opening a tiny CD. I think it was $50. At that stage in my life, the idea of having a formal budget, saving 20% of my gross, etc was overwhelming. But I did what I could. I'm no longer embarrassed by the small $ amount or the tiny baby step that CD represents. It was a step, and it was in the right direction. I wish I had saved the certificate; if I had it, I would frame it and hang it on the wall of my office!
