  • lending a car to relative

I am planning to lend my car to my sister for 2 weeks for her 10 day road trip.

What I wanted to know - Does she have to buy separate insurance? Please note that we stay in different states, she is In AR while I am in IL.

    Feedback/advise is appreciated.

There should be no problem as long as you keep your insurance company in the loop - they will tell you what you need to know. They might want to run a check on her driving record if she is driving it for any length of time. Generally speaking it is the car you are insuring.

It may be worth your time to have her name added to your policy to avoid any legal issues or headaches. It's usually free and only takes a few minutes. You sign some paperwork, she signs some paperwork, and that's about it.

Adding her name is Ok as long as her driving record is good. Otherwise they could charge you more for your insurance. I'm not a big fan of lending cars to relatives. It becomes a habit. 10 days is a long time.

Some insurances allow you to have non-disclosed drivers as long as they are 25 or older. You should check with your company to be sure before allowing them to use it.

It depends on how close you're to your sister and how well she know about car or be attentive to cars. I let me co-worker drove my car for the last time. He's stupid and shift my auto-trans hard to create a thunk noise/grind when return from D to R. My car needs to shift into N and the foot brake release to take the car out of gear first before shifting to R and then P. Never and again. Some people are just too stupid to know that E-brake is there for use whenever the vehicle is parked and since they never use their E-brake, they never know how to take your car out of E-brake and tear your brake apart. F that.

If your sister knows a little about car and is gentle with cars, I don't see the problem is. But be expected to not ask for damage repair if it happens. If it's a friend, kindly drop him/her at a rental place.
