  • Cherokee housing program

I recently was told of a housing program that gifts up to 15k for first time homebuyers. This one I happen to like, it comes with a very cool string attached. You have to go through an extensive financial training program.

DW was told by a co-worker who is applying for this program that the training program is the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University program.

Too bad our government does not use this kind of good sense.

She said the reality of knowing exactly how much housing applicants can afford is the most difficult concept to understand when they go through the training class. The easiest thing the applicants understand is this program takes some time to complete.

“It is not going to be a quick and easy, and it will not happen over night,” Whaler said.

The class discusses topics such as homeownership readiness, the advantages and disadvantages of buying a home, steps in the home buying process, costs to expect, information about credit and how to improve it. The MAP class also touches on money management, budget importance, trimming expenses, controlling day-to-day spending and saving money.

There was once a similar program here. I think it was church-sponsored, maybe Lutheran or Catholic. They also taught some home repair and maintenance. When I was getting ready to buy, I thought it would be a great thing to do. I did not qualify, though. Haven't heard of the program in years. I suppose it is defunct.

If you look hard enough that are programs across the country that will give you one incentive or another to buy a house. Some places will actually give you a house or land if you move there - of course these are places with no jobs and a rapidly decreasing population. But if your livelihood doesn't rely on location, it could be a good deal.

HEY, that's my town/county/region. We are giving away land, and will forgive taxes on any improvements for 10 years. Of course you have to drive more than an hour to work anywhere and the nearest grocery store is 20 minutes away. AND you get the good luck of having neither a dog catcher nor a municipal court so you can't do anything about the the barking dog that wakes you up every freaking morning.
