I'm an avid reader of several personal finance blogs. Trent, from The Simple Dollar, posed this question recently on his blog. What does financial freedom mean to you? I'd like to read your take on this.

To me, financial freedom means no longer having to work and being able to support myself and my family on our savings and investments. That doesn't mean I wouldn't work when we reached that point, just that I'd be able to do so because I wanted to, not because I had to.Steve

This may be a meaningless response to you, but "financial freedom" is not a phrase I ever think of. It does not immediately strike a chord right enough or good enough for me to spend much time pondering, even though I will read all the responses here.
I do think a lot of "security" though. "Financial security," I guess.... though close to financial security is bonds with other people, because I don't think one is ever secure without the healthy, sustainable connections to other people. Even in a situation as objective as me wanting to buy what some other has, the other has to be there and has to want to sell to me. Then there are many more personal and subjective relationships that all feed into security....I guess I just mean that no one is an island. My well being really depends on others in a so many ways. And I don't think all the money in the world changes that."There is some ontological doubt as to whether it may even be possible in principle to nail down these things in the universe we're given to study." --text msg from my kid

Financial freedom is having the choice whether to work while also being able to make all of my core monetary goals. Financial freedom means being able to pick and choose the work I do without worrying about the monetary consequences. This translates into about $2 million more than my current net worth. Thankfully, I have most of my life ahead of me.
