too much risk for no reward or negative reward (negative as in I lose my license)

best for me to have a low profile and be inconspicuous at all times
different employers would have different policies, mine has made it clear what they expect

      Jim,
Good luck to you. I will miss your advice on the board, but I am happy for you--not everyone is able to make their dream job happen. You have worked real hard for it (it sounds like there is a lot more hard work ahead.) I hope you enjoy your new job.

Ahh, yes, i printed out and still have somewhere your analysis of whether I will become a millionaire by the time I retire. (Your answer was yes, you should be.)

Good luck on the 7, it's not an easy test.

My window to take series 7 opened on Friday 12/10. I am probably taking it around Dec 30. Biggest issue is I get maybe 6 hours per week to study if wife takes kids out of house on Saturday, plus I do practice tests every night (for last 2 weeks anyway). Some tests I score well on (between 80-86%) and most others I get between 69%-75%. I want to have some time to review my week areas (margin accounts, muni bonds) and then I will take test soon after.

My test is scheduled for Jan 10. I missed the deadline to take test in 2010.

Good luck Jim. The world needs good financial advisors and I have no doubt that you will be a good one. You will be missed on this board.

For the record of other posters, I took and passed a series 6 license when I worked for a mutual fund company about 10 years ago. I do have background to give financial advice and I am not violating any SEC rule, as my license is no longer current. However, those posting here for advice should be aware that the advice is only as good as the background and accuracy of the information provided.

and technically the series 65 is the license which allows a person to give advice WITHOUT selling anything other than just advice. Meaning CFP's need the 65, but not the 6 or the 7 (and the 65 has lots of material from the 6 in that test I believe).

A series 7 or series 6 only allows advice to be given based on the commissions or fees of the products sold. The actual advice is coming (for someone using the 6/7) from the product being recommended, based on a standard that all advice must be suitable for client.

Well said. A CFP is going to give you the best advice all around as a result of not being product biased. It seems the public at large could be better educated on the licenses and what type of advice they are getting.

What did you do to start yourself on that career track? Degree? Books you have read? Any advice for someone that wants to get into the field?

When a few friends realized my interest, they asked me questions, and I gave them answers which were quite good and profitable.

Add to that I got tired for working for an employer which does not care about employees, and I wanted to enter a people centric business. I combined my interest (finances) with my demographic (people centric) and it merged at financial planning.

He's not completely gone. He's still lurking around here, but he doesn't really post anymore.

We've sent a few PMs back and forth.
