If you give advice for a fee you either need a 63 & 65, or just a 66.

The clarification is appreciated... do the 63-65-66 require a "sponsor" or can someone just sit for test as an independent?

My plan is to charge for the tax work and give investment advice at no charge anyway, but having the certifications is a good thing anyway.

Anyone can sit for a 65. And now that I think about it, it may be a stand alone. Yeah... with a 65 I can sell you advice for a fee, but I cannot actually sell you the products that my advice recommends.

That seems right if I'm remembering correctly.

Cause I started my CFP training while at my current firm ,with the intention of getting a 65 so I could sell people plans, or give advice for a fee. Whichever. But I didn't care who they got the products from, as I was only gonna do it on the side - to bring in a little money and help them get good unbiased advice. But our legal said that would be a conflict of interest with the firm, so I quit lookin into the 65. I really need to start studying for that up again. It'd be good to get added to my resume either way. And I was serious about taking it, cause I didn't need to get approval from anyone to do it.

You must be sponsored for a 63/66 I believe. And since the 63 is the state licensing one, you pretty much need it in order to operate (as sales). The 66 is pretty much 63 + 65 combined into 1. (And you need a series 7 to sit for it)

      That's my understanding anyways.

Scroll way to the bottom and you'll find them. I wish they gave all the specifics of what you needed, but they have some small descriptions.
