    What is the deal De-Regulated Power?

    Does this actually save us money on our power bills. I keep hearing and seeing commercial about switching power providers to lower my monthly power bills. Has anyone tried this before? It kind of seems like a scam to me and I am a little hesitant to try it.

    My friends restaurant changed provides to get a lower light bill and it did work. The light bill was lower for her. I don't know if that works for residential or not. You have the right to change providers if there is another available. When we turned the power on in a rental we just bought the Ameren company advised me there was another provider in my area and it was my choice to use them. I wasn't and am still not aware who that is but it is interesting.

        I switched my gas provider effective with last december's billing. So far I've saved $150 and all I had to do was sign a form and fax it in. I'd say it was worth it!

        Also, my gas provider (PSE&G) displays how much I would have paid if I wouldn't have switched. So, it's very easy for me to see and add up the actual savings.

          How did you learn about the other company? I'm with PSE&G also. If I have a cheaper option, I'd sure like to know about it.

            read and re-read your contract carefully. It's very important to understand the terms and conditions of your provider as some are excellent and others are close to being scams. The secondary re-seller here was recently charging $11. per GJ when the cost of natural gas is hovering around $ 7.50 per GJ. With admin cost, delivery charge and a few costs I don't understand added, our heating bill would have doubled.

              I actually saw an advertisement in the local newspaper. I called them up and asked them if they could send me historical rates for 12 months. I think they sent me 9, but regardless the pricing was consistently better than PSE&G so I signed up. Here's the website:
