  • Buying a car with AMEX

No, you can't put a car on American Express. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could?

But you can put down a deposit. Most will go $2,000.

So if you are buying a car, you can earn some bonus points if you want.

I've done this twice, the second time being today.

That way if you don't like your car, you can dispute the transaction!

I did this when I traded in my clunker last year.

My father actually has bought a car entirely by credit card. It was $10k new (baseline Mitsu Mirage, c. 1998 or so). I think he had to put it on two separate cards, but they let him do it. He did it again around 2005 on a year-end clearance Dodge Neon (again, $10k). I've been to other places that allowed it up to a point, but beyond a few thousand dollars, they charged you the processing fee (2% or 3%, whatever it is).

It depends. Sometimes they are more open to it. Better negotiation skills help. $2k is the standard that car dealerships will usually let you charge you without a fight. (Has been my experience - ask to charge the whole thing - they offer $2k - whatever - tired of negotiating at that point!). I have never pushed for more, but probably will next time. Depends on the car and dealer, to some extent.

The first one was a 2010 Camaro SS. The second was a 2010 Nissan Frontier LE. So in all, I got 4000 points on AMEX. It won't buy much, but added to my usual spending for the month, I'll get a $100 item out of their catelog.

The only reason the dealers don't like you putting car on credit cards is that they have to pay fee to the credit card companies. So if you don't mind paying extra to cover that fee, they wouldn't mind.
