  • Homemade household cleaners...

    These are my two favorites:

All Purpose Cleaner (except on granite counter tops)
    2 cups water
    1/4 cup white distilled vineger
1/4 teaspoon of pure lavender oil
1/4 teaspoon of pure tea tree oil

    Granite Countertop Cleaner
    3 1/2 cups of water
    1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
    4 drops dawn dish soap
    10 drops lavender oil

The lavender makes my house smell AMAZING!

I learned mine from the Martha Stewart Homekeeping Handbook.

    All Purpose
    1 tbl dish soap
    1 cup water

    Glass
    1 tbl Vinegar
    1 cup water

    Scrubbing Cleaner
Baking soda + water to desired consistency

I also recommend resusable static dusters and mops... though I still use a Swiffer mop.

The book also talks about how products like Pledge can ruin wood.

I buy only a few things and dilute in a spray bottle. I buy Murphy's Oil soap and dilute a few capfuls in a spray bottle. I like that for wood, etc and I like the smell of it. I also dilute Mr. Clean in a spray bottle and use that for counters, general cleaning. And, occassionally, I use bleach and dilute that in a bucket to wipe down surfaces that need bleached. That's it.

Dishwasher detergent: mix equal parts Borax & Baking soda, 2T per load, Vinegar is an excellent rinse agent.

Fantastic [all purpose cleaner] To 1 gallon water add 2T ammonia, 1 tsp. Dawn, 1 pint rubbing alcohol.

1/2 C baking soda whitens white sport socks
