I've found a baby relatively cheap. Expensive was renting a hospital grade pump. I don't find the medela PIS or ameda adequate. But I needed a pump to establish milk supply. So I've spent around $300 renting for 3 months (HCOLA) and if I didn't I wouldn't be able to breastfeed.

I still bottle and use formula occasionally. Mostly when my DH takes her out without me, then formula because it's easier than breastmilk.

So don't count on being able to use a non-hospital grade breast pump. I had one given to me, but it just doesn't work well.

Babies are no where near as expensive as children and teens. We got everything given to us or bought second hand.

We formula fed as I could not breastfeed despite trying, it was medically adviced we stop, which meant formula. It was not as expensive as I expected and I bought on sale when cheap.

As for baby food I made my own which was much cheaper than buying.

You'll find you go out less, so I think the spending doesn't really go up, just shifts direction from restaurants/movies to diapers and formula.

Good luck with it all. Babies are only expensive if you choose to make them expensive.
