  • Saving Money On Toiletries

I have a friend that says that she is able to get all her toiletries for free by shopping at Walgreens. Is it really possible to do this and how can stores give stuff away and still be in business? This doesn't make sense to me, but I have seen her garage and it is full of stuff that she claims that she gets for free.

Yes, it is absolutely possible due to careful use of coupons and sales at Walgreens. This can be done at other places too of course. Walgreens does not lose money because of reimbursement of manufacturer coupons. I've done this many times!

You can do that at Wal-greens and especially CVS...they have those "bonus" dollars you get from using the cards and boy do they add up. With manufacturer coupons, totally possible.

There are websites that will combine store specials with coupons, so things are really really cheap and sometimes free. I use Couponmom.

The bonus dollar stuff is something I haven't gotten the hang of, though.

I participate with Rite Aid Single Check rebates, in addition to the CVS and Walgreen's programs. I combine manufacturer's & sometimes store coupons to get toiletries free nearly every month.

Yes, definitely possible! I can't remember the last time I paid for toiletries, unless it was something I WANTED to pay for. For the most part, I get to try a lot of new products for free. It's a lot of work though - trust me, your friend doesn't just waltz into a store without a lot of research first. A good basic starting point on the drug stores are the iheart sites: iheartcvs, iheartriteaid, and iheartwags. Couponing sites are helpful too: afullcup or hotcouponworld. For the fearless: slickdeals has a grocery/drug store forum. Good luck! Couponing can be a lot of fun with tremendous payoffs. I wont lie to you though - I spend many hours a week on this.

I look at it as a hobby. It just happens to save money instead of having to spend money.

I look at it as a hobby as well - a hobby I spend a LOT of time on. The payoff is great, but it IS the equivalent of having a part time job.

Thank you for all of the comments. Is there one drugstore that is better at doing this than others? I have CVS, Walgreens and RiteAid near me.

Every week is different and there is no one store that's better than others. The last few weeks have been wonderful at Walgreens. Before that, I've had various shopping sprees at both RiteAid and CVS. The only thing you can do is read the coupon forums each week and build scenarios that apply to your life. There's no right or wrong way to do things here. What matters is that YOU are happy with the savings and that you are getting things you need for a lot less money than before.

My wife is one of those coupon queens too. She rarely parts with our money in CVS. In 2009 she saved us between 75-80% off retail. This years she's committed to go deeper. It's amazing how much she gets for almost nothing.

                      Happy shopping,

I do this for razors. I haven't paid for a razor in over 4 years (with one exception*). And, I'm talking about the razors that cost $8.99 to $15.99 per pack. I typically will have 3 or 4 extra razors in my closet. I go through them quickly as I have a really tough beard. Shaving cream is a little harder to get for free. But I have done okay with that as well.

*The one exception was when I was traveling for business, forgot to bring a razor, and then I had to buy one. I was so used to getting them for free that it was a painful thing to actually have to pay for one. I debated about not shaving for a week. However, because I was traveling on business, I thought it was best that I did. So, I reminded myself that most of the time I get it for free, it's okay to spend $10 on it once in awhile.
