  • question on pell grant and my taxes

I am doing my taxes, online. I was doing them with taxact and then another program, and I was getting something a little different on one area.

My husband received a pell grant for some classes and received a 1098-T form for it. When I put everything in on the Taxact program it took the $592 and put it in on line 19 on the 1040a form, which is for tuition and fee deductions (and filled out a 8917 form) and then it deducted the $592 off for my adjusted gross income.

but when I did it with the other program, it never asked me about the form 1098-T and when I tried putting all my info in It actually did a 1040 and not a 1040a, but the thing that has me baffled is it didn't take the $592 and put it in the tuition and fee deductions, it put it in the refundable education credit on line 66 for $237 (from doing the form 8863 American Opportunity Education Credit)

I went on reading the Pub 970 it was saying to look at for questions.
By doing it 2 different ways it changes my AGI for when I do the state taxes. ( to me it seems like the first one from taxact is correct, it bluntly had me put in the 1098-T information and calculated everything. The other one was asking different questions but never saying anything about a 1098-T form. I just want to make sure that it all comes in correctly, so that way when I do my State taxes I am putting the right numbers from the other sheets and not have the same numbers it does makes my final numbers both different.
