  • Considering moving as a stressful work?

My friends say that when they move, it seems that it is one of the worst things that they experience. Really, if you did plan well your move it could really be a mess and full of hassles.

There are many things to consider in choosing the best moving company for you.

Moving isn't just about the stuff you move, but your emotional state and attitude as well.

I have moved many many many times

it is stressful, even when planned
part of it is the "finality" of a given situation
part of it is "don't break my stuff"
part of it is "its LOTS of work"
even when you hire someone, you risk them not showing up, breaking stuff or or other- the concerns just shift- hiring moves does not go away.

Here are some "anecdotes" to my moving experiences

      1) moved from MI to MD in 1996 following my senior year of college. I believe this move was partial move from both MI (where my clothes and college stuff was) and from my parents house (where some of my room decor and other stuff was). That alone causes some stress. It took coordination, and it got done, but if you think about it... I went to college about 400 miles from my parents house, and MD was about 1400 miles from MI and 400 miles from my parents house. Lots of distance to cover when you don't have any money.

The time from when I accepted job to when I moved was about 10 days, so I needed to coordinate fast to find a place to live and get my stuff moved.

      2) Moved from MD to MI in winter of 1997 after 15 months in MD...
coordinating this took less than 3 days. rented uhaul, drove to MD, picked up stuff, drove back in uhaul. Moved 100% of my stuff all by myself within48 hours over a weekend (left Friday, was completely unpacked by mid day Sunday). That is 2800 miles in 48 hours. That is stress, and its tough to duplicate or plan for that. FYI after 15 months the government contract I was on did not renew, so I had to move...

      3) Moved from MI to Ohio in spring of 1997... my 6 month contract with Ford expired, plus I had finished my degree while at Ford, so being paid full time pay was a good reason to move. This was "well planned"... two friends helped me move and we took 3 vehicles from MI to Ohio, turned in the uhaul in Ohio, and one of vehicles drove my 2 friends back to MI. Took better part of a weekend to move, it was fun, but busy.

      4) Moved from apt to condo around 2000. My girlfriend had never moved before, and I had, that alone caused stress (she didn't do it my way LOL). My girlfriend, her mother, and her aunt, plus me moved all my stuff (I was only male which was moving, and I must say my future in laws impressed me with how much work they did). My wife focused more on the condo, while I emptied the apartment (I got raw end of that deal).

      5) Moved out of condo in 2005 into apt while house was being built. This involved moving "most" of the big stuff to storage, and necessities to the apartment. We knew we were moving, the closing date came up fast (from date of offer to closing might have been 10 days). We knew which storage we were using, but still had to box everything up and move it.

      6) Moved out of apt into house in Dec of 2005. It was cold, that alone made this move memorable. We hired movers for the big stuff, but they showed up late and "did not want to work", but one of them moved us while the other hung out in the moving truck the entire time.

Nothing ever goes perfect. If I had to move, I could do it well, if I had to run a moving company, I am OK with that as long as I don't lift. Because I know to pack boxed light enough for me to carry, I can move myself when I pack. If others pack the stuff, then its possible I could not lift it...

I got in a bad mood cleanign out a drawer one day so I kow I hate moving. I like things sorted and in order. lol. That being said, at times it must be done. I like being settled. I am afraid if I move, I won't like the new place or area. Also, I don't see the point in moving 2 cities over just for a slightly bigger home or slightly different scene. Also if kids are in a school there ar emore issues.
