  • smart phone suggestions...Nexus One?

    Hi guys,

I am toying with the idea of getting an unlocked Nexus One android phone from google for $530. I already have a t-mobile sim card with about 990 prepaid minutes left which is good for a year (and I can buy another 1000 minutes then for $100). For phone conversations I use maybe 20 to 30 minutes a month max. The screen on my current phone just died (been using it by feel for the last few days lol).

One big thing that would be a selling point for the Nexus is if I can use it when hiking/camping as a gps, phone, portable internet (for vacation hikes and airport use), camera and ebook reader. We currently take 4 devices for all of these uses (going without internet atm) but a first glance at the Nexus One makes me think it could serve all three to some extent. The space and weight savings would be tremendous, as every ounce counts when you are hiking 50 to 60 miles in rugged mountains.

I like the power saving OLED screen but I am worried that it might have issues displaying thin text when used as an ebook reader. I also am curious if the 5 megapixel camera is really decent and if the gps receiver would be acceptable for hiking.

Open to any opinions or if any of you have the Nexus One and could look at an ebook or the gps function and let me know how it works for you it would be great. Thanks.

The hardware (HTC) is superb, although it does not have a thumb keyboard (if you care about that).

On the software side, the OS (Android) has great potential, but right now, the apps library is very limited at this time. Google has created many portable versions of their desktop cloud apps, so if that's all you really need, then you will be fine. Otherwise, this is going to be a sore spot for a while.

Windows 7 Mobile has been announced, and the conglomerate involved seems quite impressive. The proposed phone looks like a Zune with cellphone capabilities. That and Apple are Android's main competition.

If you still want an Android, I also recommend looking into the Motorola Droid.

Droid is verizon only right? That wouldn't work with my existing T-mobile sim card and minutes. Also the unlocked droid is $599 vs the nexus $530 and uses a regular tft screen (which may or may not actually be better, though battery life is a major concern when hiking and the OLED is supposed to be VERY efficient). We will probably carry an extra battery and solar charger. Note this rules out the Iphone since you can't even replace it's battery, even if you jailbreak it to work on t-mobile.

You can get a portable battery for the iPhone. When it is fully charged and you plug it in to the iPhone, it takes about 30 minutes to fully recharge. One costs $50.

I just got the Motorola Cliq from Tmobile. I like it. It does all you said you wanted and it has a full keyboard. I didn't go with the nexus for 2 reasons. My fat fingers require a keyboard.....LOL and I have a family plan with my dd on it. Nexus requires you to be on a single plan for some reason (this according to the Tmobile guy) and then I would have to get a single plan for her. Of course that won't affect you since you don't want a plan. I wish there were more apps like for the Iphone but it's ok. I did try out the GPS a little for fun but keep it turned off to conserve battery. Also I believe it is only $400. I got mine for $149 as an upgrade from my Blackberry.

I'm not tech savvy but curious as to how you can use the internet without a data plan however.
