  • If the Hillbilly Housewife lived here...

The following blog has an "emergency menu" that says it can feed 2 adults and 2-4 kids for a week. In 2006, it cost about $45 in the author's area. In 2009, it was up to $70.

It averages about 1700 calories per person per day, a good amount of protein and fiber, but only 2-3 servings of fruit/veggies.

Just for grins, I decided to price it out using the online prices for the supermarket where I shop (Vons/Safeway). It came out to $120 here in southern CA. Would likely be a bit less at Wal-mart.

How much would it cost where you live?

First off, I think it is fascinating you actually ran the numbers on this.

I have rechecked the list and it is filled with basic items and no convenience foods or anything fancy and look at high the price is and especially in your area.

Next, if I am understanding what you did, I checked my supermarket owned by Safeway here in our area and they do not furnish a price listing of items in the store. Only the sale items can they list a price for.

There was not any way to check what a 32 ounce bottle of canola oil would cost unless in the flyer of the week's special.

I have not tried Wal Mart's website to find out if they list items and prices.

Those are some high prices to pay for a super basic almost survival menu, thanks for posting this.

Vons offers delivery service in my area, and the prices of the items are the same as in the store. So I just entered the list on the website and looked at the total in the shopping cart. (Delivery fee is extra, but they often send out free delivery coupons.)

It would also be around the same in my area (may be $10 dollars here or there). But the items in the last are very basic. Its hard to survive just on them and still stay happy

Creamed Tuna & Peas over Rice; Unless my kids were starving, they wouldn't eat this (me either!). It reminds me of a dish my mother called Tuna Wiggle when we were growing up. It was served over bread that would get soggy and gross.

My DH and kids wouldn't eat a lot of the food on here, just becuase they are so picky. DH refuses to eat casseroles.

I think the idea of these recipes are for people who don't have alot of options for food and need the absolute basics at the lowest price. I agree there are things I won't eat either. I love tuna however. I have always thought that casseroles were really good too. I am sure there are some that aren't but even mac and cheese can be considered a casserole!
