Our old vacuum bit the dust and we decided to buy a new one. We made a major mistake because we didn't check Consumer Reports. We thought we could just buy a machine. Well, we bought a Bissell and there is a design flaw in the handle. As you use it, it loosens and you have to keep pushing it back into alignment so you can turn it on or off. Otherwise it doesn't make a connection. I emailed the company because you can't take it back to the store where you purchased it and got an email stating we had to call the 800 number. I just got off the phone with the person and she asked if we used the screws that came with it. Yes, we did -- they are as tight as we can get them. She wanted to know if there was a problem with the handle being broken. No. We were then told we had to take it to a service center 30 miles away. Customer service - ha! Yet another piece of junk!

I would sure check with the store, too, depending on how long you have had it.My other blog is Your Organized Friend.

Thank you to all who suggested I take the thing back. I called Kohls and they told me very nicely to bring it back and if I needed help, to pull up to the front door, come in and ask someone to send someone to help me. They were wonderful when I got there (I didn't need help!) and other than a couple of questions, refunded the money on my credit card. I wanted to put their store name in because I am so darn pleased! Kohls rocks! And so do SA posters!

rob62521,
Good job! If you are still in the market for a vacuum cleaner, we just purchased one in Dec (after consulting consumer reports.)
It was the Hoover Platinum Bagged UH30010COM. It is an upright and also comes with a small canister vacuum.
What I like about it is--it is relativly light weight. I bought it online and it was shipped to our house (shipping included).

I HATE the new vacuums! Most of them are just plastic pieces of junk. My Kenmore Cannister vac started falling apart shortly after I bought it and is nowhere near the quality of other old cannister vacs of bygone years. I keep it because I can't find anything any better in the current crop of plasticized junk.
I am going to look for a vac at a yard sale or auction this summer.
