Thanks for all of the replies. It sounds like a used VCR is going to be the best option for my mom. She definitely wouldn't want anything that had any added cost involved. I will check out ebay for used TiVos with lifetime subscriptions, though. That might be an option. In fact, I might want one of those for myself.
