  • Sizing Up a Job Offer

    When you're considering a new job offer, what are the top 5 most important considerations for you? Can you rank them in terms of importance?

    In no particular order, mine are:
    * Money
    * Quality of health insurance, 401k and other benefits
    * Commuting distance: this is a big one for me. i found when commuting over an hour (1-way) to one job, it gave me backaches (no time for exercise in sitting in the car after sitting all day at desk), and i had no TIME for anything else; on weekends, i didn't want to go anywhere. Now i work in hometown, so if i need to meet the oil delivery guy (COD) at home during the workday, no big deal.
    * Does the job appear to be interesting and challenging, and enhance my career development?
    * Job "lifestyle:" do people expect you to work beyond the official 9 to 5 with no extra pay? Business casual or formal dress code? Friendly environment?

    1. Commute is my number one determinating factor should I consider switching jobs. With the price of Gas now, If I'm working to fill up my gas tank, not interested. Teleworking options, what incentives are they employing to make a long commute attractive at any level?
    2. 401K matching... won't go to another job that doesn't match. My current job doesn't match so I need to come up in that regard.
    3. Benefits. what percentage does the new company cover? Cost of Co-pays, cost of premiums
    4. Cant do an intense invironment, and I have to be able to learn something.

    I didn't list money on my offer request, because I'm not going to consider any of the above or even consider leaving my present situation if the money isn't outstanding.
