  • Employer tuition reimbursement and taxes

I have been accepted into a master's degree program beginning in January 2010. My employer will be reimbursing my tuition, books, and fees at 80%. I'm wondering what the tax implications will be for this. The most recent information I can find on the IRS website addressing this issue is Publication 970, which is dated 2008. This publication states that up to $5250 of these reimbursements are non-taxable for a qualified program, which my employer meets. I assume anything over $5250 will be taxable. I have been unable to find anything regarding the California taxes. Does anyone have any information, most specifically on how California treats these reimbursements?
