  • The Face of Homelessness

Michelle Singletary (a financial expert who I just adore!) writes a column in the Washington Post that really helps to touch on topics that I think may be unique to certain populations, while still being informational to other populations (I say this because often, when I am reading about finances, the topics are things that I simply cannot relate to because of age--the discussion is geared towards 40+, or income (higher income earners), or station in life--people whose children are attending college, they are contemplating their 2nd home, etc.). She really speaks in a way that I can understand and addresses the unique needs of people like me, who are focused on finances, but may have a limited background in it.

She wrote a wonderful article about the new face of homelessness at face of homeless search results on washingtonpost.com. I am not a representative for the WP, and you do have to sign up for the free access. I would post the entire article here, but that may be some sort of copyright issue, so I won't.

Anyway, as a formerly homeless person, I think that it is really important to discuss those that are going through this. One of my first comments when the economic melt-down began was that there was going to be A LOT of homeless people as a result of the economic downturn.

It is very hard being in that situation, and if you have never stood in line at a shelter, I really can't explain how that messes with your head much later in life.

I really hope you all check this author out....I like her advice, and I like that she talks to people of varying different audiences.
