  • Who do you tip and how much?

Following up on the pizza guy tip thread, I started to think about all the extra money I spend each month in tips. I think tips are one of those phantom areas where money leaks out of budgets that nobody can remember. They are given in cash and no receipt is received for them so they are easy to forget about.

I started adding up and I probably spend close to $50 a month in tips from the barber to restaurants. Who do you tip and how much do you think you spend a month in tips?

I don't break it out. The only tip I do is restaurants. I have long hair and DH cuts it. I think he tips the barber when he gets his hair cut, he spends $6 total on a haircut (about every 4 months).

I've wondered about tip jars in different places. One of our favorite treats when we are traveling is Ben & Jerry's milkshakes. I just noticed they have a tip jar. They are always nice and polite so I'm thinking I should tip, but I'm fairly sure they're paid above minimum wage so ...

I don't tip anyone as I believe the business I use should factor all expenses into the price rather than rely on any goodwill by the customer.

How European. Lol, I'm kidding. I tend to tip my barber well because I find barbers give better service when tipped well. Sadly, it's a fact of that business.

Tipping is part of the generous American way. Many people, especially pizza delivery personnel, are doing that as a second means of income. I don't mind bypassing the business factoring all expenses into the price...while in the States I tip to help.

I pay £50 for my haircut as it is, if that doesn't ensure a high degree of quality then I don't know what will

It certainly is something of a courtesy, as well as way of maintaining a certain relationship with a business or even rectifying a situation. For example, a few days ago, I ordered chinese food to the house. I usually pick it up but I was lazy so I figured I'd do that. Anyway, turns out the my bell wasn' t working or something and the guy waited for about 10 minutes or so, so I tipped him a dollar or two more than necessary, knowing these guys have a business to run on a Friday night (ok maybe three, but this was one of those times), just to show I am a nice guy!

However, if I go to a local diner and they give the wrong order or have a demeaning attitude, the last thing I'm going to do is tip them for that kind of behavior. That just reflects badly on you, the customer.

You are lucky to have found a cut for £50 Bruce...my hair reaches below my waist so you can imagine what I would pay! Cheers!

Although I agree that the price of things should include all costs, rather than tipped personnel having to rely on tips to earn a decent wage, that's not the way it is in the US. I always tip 15-20% and then round up at restaurants, and I tip $5 for my haircut, which I guess is 20%. I tip deliveries (usually Chinese food) at a rate of $1 per meal, which usually comes up to about 15%.

Last time I got mine cut professionally, just cut, no style, no perm no wash, it ran 60$ I will NEVER get a professional to cut it again! (hair is down to my knees)

Can't comment on the tip, havn't tipped anyone in ages. (haven't stiffed either, just not using those types of services)

Re: Who do your tip and how much?

Tipping can go overboard.... and then the oxymoron- manditory gratuity- really pisses me off.

I do tip at a resturant if the service is good. If not, I let my mouth give a few tips to the manager and I usualy get a free something out of that.

I tip a delivery person- because that saves me a trip and a dollar or two is cheaper than for me to use my gas to get it

I tip my hairdresser annually for Christmas or for her birthday, I'll write her a special check. Now she would rather prefer something for her daughter, and I have no problems going to get a cute little outfit or something like that. I don't mind showing my gratitude or appreciation for a service she provides, that I am unequipped and unwilling to provide for myself. I've also known her for 8 or 9 years now, so she's my friend. I don't mind doing extra.

If I go out on a date, I do make mental note of the way my date tips. If he doesn't tip (and the service was on par), then he doesn't date me again, I have another tip for him. To me, since it is a custom here, that shows ignorance or malcontent and those two behavoirs might trickle down to how he might treat me. If he can't tip the Valet... all of those things I look at.

Re: Who do your tip and how much?

I tip at the beauty shop, nail salon and restaurants 15% usually, very rarely 20% for special services. I very much tip according to service received...last time I got my manicure, I felt she rushed the job, didn't really listen to what I wanted etc, so she only got 10%.

I now live in New Zealand, and I tip no one. Tipping is not part of the kiwi culture. Waiters and waitresses are paid above minimum wage and you are not expected to tip them.

When I lived in Canada, I used to tip and I usually tipped well. I tipped well because I did a stint as a waiter when I was a student and I worked my ass off and the tips were allowed me to achieve a decent wage. I tip 15 % in a restaraunt, I tip the waitress in a bar a dollar for each round and I tip the pizza delivery guy usually the change from the cost of the pizza.

I am a waitress and make $2.83 an hour and depend on tips. I look at it this way, If you can afford to go out to eat and be served then you should tip accordingly. ( the going rate is 18% )
