  • Where would you go?

If you had $1000 for a month of lodging (just basic lodging - nothing fancy needed) and were going to stay in that particular place the entire month (not traveling from city to city), where would you go outside the US? Looking for beautiful natural scenery places to explore more than fancy places to stay.

Places I've been: Norway has spectacular scenery and great hiking if you are looking to travel far. It's not cheap, but you could get decent housing, your own kitchen for that price for the month, I would think, during off season.
If you are out in the middle of no where you would probably also need a rental car.

There are beautiful glaciers, national parks, etc.

Places I want to go: New Zealand and the Alps. Can't tell you from experience, but if I was going to travel far (I'm about an 8 hour drive from Norway) this is where I would go.

Germany. I'd backpack between cities, staying (very cheaply, might I add) in the hostels that dot the country. The German countryside is beautiful, and the people are (in most cases) quite friendly and accommodating. Germany is a perfect country to just explore, because there is so much to see in a small, compressed land area. Switzerland comes in a close second, though I've not spent much time there myself.

The New Zealand idea is also a great one -- I've not been there yet, but it's on my short list of places to travel to.

I would go somewhere new, for me that is easy, I haven't been more than a half dozen places. But if I had traveled a great deal I would aim for new but worthy.

My French teacher told us that some of the old castles in France have been turned into hotels and hostels. I would love to stay in one of them one day.

So Jeffrey, are you planning to take a trip somewhere? You're in Japan right? Does that mean you're confined to places in Japan, or anywhere on the planet?

As for me, eh, I'm easy. Like to travel, but can't really right now for children sake. Heck, for $1000 a month of paid rent, I'll be thrilled to stay just about anywhere.

I'm heading to Baja California in Mexico for October, but am looking for other places that would be fun for future months (one of the key advantages of working on the Internet is that as long as there is a connection, you can work anywhere you want).

I'm thinking of Costa Rica next, but don't want to limit myself to central/south america for these trips so thought I'd throw it out there to see where others would go.

We have been to Costa Rica twice....it is very nice and you will find the food and lodging in the non-resort areas to be very inexpensive. You can have a traditional Costa Rican meal (which usually gives you a choice of rice and beans or beans and rice) including a meat and a fried plantain (sort of like a banana) and hunk of cheese for around $1.50

The roads are BAD. I mean, maybe they are considered good for central american standards, but by USA standards they would all be condemed and closed. We drove across a one lane bridge over a 70 foot drop to a river going to Manual Antonio that scared the crap out of me. The bridge had many gaps where you could see the river flowing below you, and only some of these were spanned with various length loose pipes which rattled and vibrated when you drove over them. To make matters worse, we were behind a semi truck of all things! I must admit to saying a few prayers, but we made it safely and actually did the same bridge again on the way back.
