  • Car problems

So I hit a mule deer on vacation. Had to have most of the body on the front left replaced, and the shop put a new ac unit in too. I picked the car up on Friday, drive directly to the quick-e-lube for an oil change. No problems, car drives fine, all the fluids are great, etc. Nothing abnormal. Drove appx. 100 miles that night running around.

The next morning I drove 15 miles to drop my wife off at an appt. No problems. 4 hours later as soon as I left the house, it started shaking a bit, giving me problems accelerating, etc. All I know about car maintenance is that they get the oil changed every 3000 miles. So we go run some errands after the appointment, and when we leave at the end of the day the car is violently shaking, smelling like something is burning, and won't accellerate over 40 mph.

There are 61,900 on it. I had an all intensive tune up at 50,000. Spark plugs, light bulbs, coils cleaned, air filter, oil, tranny fluid, etc. So, who would be the one to fix this? The shop that does all my routine maintenance just changed the oil and sent me on my way, so I don't see how they could have affected anything. But the body shop who replaced the AC system and everything on the front end said they didn't do any engine work, that none was needed. It would be a hell of a coincidence, and an expensive one at that, if the day after I get my car out of the shop for $3000 worth of front end damage and a $1000 deductable, that the engine decides to take a dump.

    Any suggestions?

First, check your oil level, then take it to auto-zone if you have a check engine light.

If no light, take it to a service shop and run a diagnostic to find the problem.

If problem is repair related, take it back and attempt to get satisfaction.

Just a guess but are you sure all fluids are where they should be? This sounds like it may be dangerously low on oil. The shaking and lack of compression(acceleration) would seem to point to that.

It's not completely unheard of that they didn't refill the crankcase with oil but it's hard to say. That's not something I would expect from a low mileage vehicle that just came from the shop.

I had this happen once before I went on a trip, the lube place was 3 qts low.

Also, one time while driving to colorado pulling a trailor, I didn't check the oil at every station and nearly ran out.
