  • Kids & Financial Literacy - 2009

There's a very intriguing collection of statistics from numerous sources at the below website. Second article down, called Making the Case for Financial Literacy - 2009.

I know many of you teach your children about finances and I think many if not all parents with children old enough to understand, should print out the pages of the article, highight what the concerns you personally as an adult and talk with your children about those specific items.

There's a ton of mis-information out there... and nothing is ever guaranteed... but from the statistics it appears that many children want to learn, but are not sure how to best accomplish that process.

There's lots of information about financial matters available at public libraries, if not at the schools. Financial matters, affect each and every one of us every single day of our lives; we should not feel so helpless with regard to money.

I couldn't agree more that financial literacy has to start at a young age. Some schools are using "marketplace" type projects where kids work, receive a paycheck, and manage a budget. From what I've read they have been hugely successful....if only more people had received this education! For those of you who don't have one, it's time to start building a financial foundation.

Great idea. Our five year old actually has a pretty good grasp of economics. And when he wants yet another toy, I explain he's welcome to earn it, getting paid five cents for little jobs he does around the house. It has been very interesting that at the last few garage sales we've gone to, he's expressed interest in an item, but when I say, fine, you have enough money saved from your work to buy it yourself, his interest quickly fades....
