  • I always get this scam e mail on craigs list

Whenever I post anything to sell over $50. I know, of course, it's a scam. I was just wondering how exactly and who is trying to rip me off. I have been getting this same e mail for YEARS. I have a large beer mirror for sale which elicted the latest one.
    Here it is copied
    Hello
I will like to know if the above item is still available for sale,
i will like to buy this item so pls i do want you to withdraw the advert from Craigslist i dont mind giving you an extra $50 to add to it cos i dont want to lose this this item. I will also like you to know that i will be paying via check due to the distance as i am located in TN.I will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.

    1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address be it residential or postal address
    3.Your phone number.

**I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping
i will have my mover come over as soon as you have cashed the check**
    Have a nice day

I've never seen that. Have you reported it?

I've seen other people say they get the exact message. Obviously, you already know to ignore it. It's probably good that you posted about it here, though, as it will alert someone else to the scam. It is now a classic one.

For those not yet in the know, if you accepted this offer, a check would come to you (no Pay Pal or electronic payment). It would be written for a significant amount more than your were asking for both the item and to pay the mover. (Thye may ask you to pay the mover.) The buyer would then apologetically and politely contact you to point out their own error and ask you to issue a refund for the overpayment. Later, your own bank would inform you that the buyer's check (even if it was a cashier's check!) was bad. If you had sent the refund, you are then out that money plus you may owe your bank fees on the bad check.

It can get really bad if you assumed the check was good, and wrote other proportionate checks or used a debit card linked to the account. You could end up overdrafted and owing fees for that as well. A couple years ago some one on this forum fell for this scam when selling computers online and got hit badly.

I got them too. alot of them!!! I hate them but the one I really hated was when we posted a truck for sale. We were asking below value because it has high miles. Someone actually emailed me and scolded me for listing to low. I emailed them back and told them to buy it and resell it. Never heard from them again! Who do these people think they are!?

The sad thing is that lots of people fall for these scams. Otherwise, the scammers would just go away. People can be incredibly gullible.

If they send it to millions, they find a few suckers. Hard to believe you know? I get it for every craigs posting. I like craigs by the way, but most people offer me really low for my items so someone saying "hey I'll take it!" is not the norm. lol

Non flat screen tv's by the way are practically worthless(haveo one up now and got offered $25 for a newer medium one)

I sold a lot of furniture on there.

I occasionally get something similar when I sell items on eBay. I will get a message, through eBay, that says a buyer will pay double + shipping for the item, but they do not want to bid on it. They want me to end the auction and pay me by money gram. They ask for the same contact info.

I report the eBay'er name to eBay, but it is so easy to sign up for new accounts and it only takes one person to not only not report it, but fall for it.

Why doesn't anyone get their address and show up on their doorstep with some cops? You have to mail the check somewhere that they can pick it up, right?
