How do you hold down your "miscellaneous" spending?

We use an 'allowance' category free to spend this set amount as we wish ea. month. If not entirely spent it goes in the safe to be added to Vacation fund. A 'household' budget line repair/replace household appliances, linens, anything that would not be categorized as Renovation.

We re-cap ea. year to see where our spending has significantly changed. Food has escalated this year, operating the car has decreased and we can see hardly any spending for clothes or household goods.
