I just started a new job working as a staff member of a university. This is not a prestigious job (pays less than $35k a year). I had 3 interviews for this job and now that I have started my boss told me she had over 300 applications for the position! She forwarded over 100 applications to her associate and from there they narrowed it down. As I was in training today, my boss checked her email and she is still getting job applications and follow ups from the job listing that was posted almost 3 weeks ago!
So don't quit your job with no back up plan or job, and don't listen to people who think the economy is "not that bad" or "getting better". There are still plenty of people unemployed, actively looking...and universities turn out a fresh crop of job competition every spring.
I feel very very lucky to have beaten out 300 applicants. And I also feel that if I don't hit the ground running in this job- my boss is aware that I am very replaceable.
