S&S, don't stress, if you choose to intially forgo internet service and decide at a later date that you've changed your mind, you can sign up! We have problems with our service in this condo complex and one of the residents gave permission for us to share his service. Every so often I find my service cuts out and automatically reverts to my neighbor. I've called and asked her about it and she is unaware of this oddity.

How can you tell if someone cuts into your bandwidth?

We have never had a security issue using commerical providers but some of those schools, cafes & airport sites are likey more problematic than I realize.

Thank you, Snafu. From what I can gather - I am definitely going to go with the limited basic cable plan for $18.99 a month. As for internet...I think I might wait and see. I'm on it WAY too much anyway.

All you need to do is go into your router and see who is actively connected. Our wireless is secured and we've never had any issues.

We'd never go entirely without Internet here; we're both pretty much online most of our waking hours. But then we only pay $19 or so for DSL mid-speed (but it beats our T1 lines at work just because of the multiple users situation) -- and we use the land line for local calls only... total phone bill with DSL is about $45 with taxes.

There are a few unsecured wireless in our neighborhood as well. It's not right to use them and I wouldn't recommend that anyone conduct ANY type of personal bussiness over an unsecured network. Absolutely anyone linked-into an unsecured network can monitor everything else happening on that network with specific software.... and with a little bit of know-how.
