  • Verizon FIOS?

I have been shopping for cable and internet for my new place. Does anyone have Verizon Fios? Do you like it?

    ::UPDATE::

I just found out that this is not available in my area. What IS available is a local package of internet and cable for $95 a month. I am not going to have a landline phone line. The thing is, the internet package includes "two way" internet. Does anyone know what that is? Is it fast? Good?

I'm trying to research...thanks for any help!

Not sure what is available in your area but we have Cablevision here.

We currently have phone and internet service through Verizon. It is the phone and DSL at the office - no FIOS in our area yet either and we're been waiting years for it.

The phone package we have at the office (no phone at home at all) is about $43 a month. It includes features like caller id and call forwarding which is necessary because I forward the office phone to my cell so that I am always available if no one is at in the office (parents are away). The DSL portion is about $32. Plus taxes of about $17, the monthly bill for both is about $93.

DH has set up a computer network that includes all the computers at work and our computers at home and we piggy back off the internet service from work so we get it free at home.

After much nagging from DH, today I called Cablevision and transferred to their phone and internet service for $29.95 each a month for a year. After the first 4 months, they will send us a $200 AMEX gift certificate.

It will cost me $19.95 for the installation cost. $40 to transfer our existing phone number and $45 for the back up battery for the modem so we won't lose phone service during an electrical outage.

I figure that the $200 AMEX GC will pay for all the extra upfront costs. And while the savings is not that significant, ($43+$32=$75 minus $60 = $15/mth savings since the taxes will be about the same I think) it will still be a savings and the internet speed will be waaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster so my DH tells me.

Check and see if Cablevision Optimum is available in your area.

That seems pretty high. For $95 / month it should include phone in addition to TV and internet. I currently have only cable internet though Comcast. When I originally signed up with Adelphia, it was only $42 a month. Since then the price has increased to $59 for only internet. Their ploy is that cable TV and inter net is only $70 per month.

I'd look and see what internet package they are offering you at that price. From my experience, most companys will offer 3 different bandwidths. I would go with the lowest tier service (dont remember Mb/sec). For what I do, down load music, play Everquest, watch YouTube vids, it is more than enough.

Also look at your TV package. They may have alot of HBO / Showtime / local channels, etc rolled into your package. Figure out what you actually want, and what you will actually use and go with that.

Limited basic cable is $18.99 a month. Limited is $50 a month.

        Internet is $50.

I would have no problem with doing basic cable, but the channels I watch are Lifetime and HGTV...and they are not included. Maybe it would be possible to get limited basic and then add in just a few channels?

I have no idea...but I would love my cable/internet to be below $100.

It all depends on the area. Here, Comcast is now offering $99, which comes to about $105 with all the taxes and fees for cable, internet and phone that includes HBO. Verizon FiOS has the same $99 promo which is more like $110 with taxes and fees for tv, internet and phone.

Who is your cable company? I'm sure if you shop around you can find a deal that works for you.

Service electric is our cable company. Most other providers don't serve the area because it is a little more rural.

I am thinking of doing the $18.99 limited basic cable and then finding another internet provider since there's is $50 a month.

            I don't know...this is a tough one.

I had been contemplating switching from Comcast to FIOS after transferring my service when I moved into my new home and getting crappy service from Comcast. The only things that stopped me was the fact that Verizon only had 1.0Mbps internet speed and the cable was through Direct TV (satellite) and a 2yr contract was involved. I'm so used to switching companies that its not even an option for me. MAYBE if the speeds were comparable, I'd think twice. I just have this love-hate relationship with Comcast right now...

Fios is wonderful when you have power! If you are out of power for more than an hour you have no internet, phone or TV!
We had an ice storm in December with no power for two weeks and no FIOS and no refund!
