Update on furniture shopping...

So, I went to a large chain furniture store that has a very good reputation in my area. They have the 3 year 0% interest financing available...

I was shopping around and of course got haggled by a sales associate. He told me to put list all of the collections that I like and he would put them in a package and let me know how much they were. He gave me the grand total ($6,000 for living room, bedroom and dining room set) and gave me the 3 year 0% financing jingle.

I asked him if there would be a discount if I paid in cash and he said he could give me a little over 10% off. Then he went on to say that he could offer me interest free financing until 2011 ALONG with the 10% off.

I then asked if he could offer more of a discount if I paid cash...and he said that he could not...he would just give me the same deal as the no interest till 2011. He told me that he could hold all of these things until after I close on my house in August and then decide whether or not I would like to buy them.

What do you think? I was happy he could offer the cash discount...and I don't think there is any other room for negotiation. The furniture is gorgeous. My dad checked out the quality and was happy to see that the workmanship was wonderful and everything was solid wood.

PS. The price tag on the dining room set is not accurate...it includes a lot of other pieces as well.

you've asked for opinion...please don't feel hurt that I am dissapointed that your selection gives no hint of your personality, is so matchy matchy and pseudo 'traditional'. If you've painted the D Rm wall Burgundy and hung a giant mirror on the largest wall...maybe. Lines of sofa are great but what will keep it from being blah? Will the room be painted today's most popular warm grey? What makes it reflect who you are? What you love, what S&S feels passionate about?

Is the show condo 'staged?" Go look at show homes and dissect the components that make a place appealling. What are your favorite colors? What works well with your hair color and skin tones?

Check out prices on-line; the manufacturer likely has a web page. You want to know where the items are made...China or S. Carolina? Possibly forward those pictures to other furniture stores and ask for their price list.

Thank you so much for your post...and no I don't find it offensive at all.

My approach was to use some good quality, traditional pieces and then work with some fun quirky accessories to balance them out.

I am definitely into neutrals, but I like them to be very layered and textured. I would love to pair that sofa with a cream and brown zebra print rug and then some blue and green throw pillows. Drapery will be another place that I can use the accent colors as well as bedding.

I am going to wait a year before I paint because I want to be able to appreciate how the light reflects into different rooms within the house. The wall color is going to depend on the accessories I find within drapery, bedding, table linens and other textiles.

So I'm not offended at all! I wanted high quality basics and figured I can play around and take my time finding the fun, playful, edgy accessories later.

That's not necessarily a bad thing... with conservative furniture, you can generally be happy with what you have over time -- too trendy, and in 5 years from now it'll be out of style and you may want to replace it.

Personally, I think the pieces all look very nice... I like them. However, do look at colors, based on where you'll be putting them. snafu has a point, you want some contrast in your home.

I will also point out that the couch and dining room set are in the same room...so I wanted to to go together somewhat. If I had a formal dining room, I might have been a little bit more daring. But I fell in LOVE with both...so that is really what I think matters.
