  • Ridiculous bridal registry item

Just in case you were worried that conspicuous consumption was a thing of the past, my cousin is getting married in July. My wife pulled up her bridal registry today to start gift shopping and found this item:

moss > Max Bill wall clock (large)

Just in case it isn't bad enough that this very plain wall clock is nearly $500, they can't even throw in the AA battery you need to run the thing.

Who the heck buys this stuff?

That clock must be painted platinum.... right? I mean, come on .... my wristwatch is better-looking and more functional than that thing!

Unless they are a really high maintance, high earning power couple, they are going to regret those expensive items a few months in. Cash would come in more handy.

Interestingly, they are registered at several places. Only 2 items, I think, are from this place. Most are from Bed, Bath and Beyond and are relatively normal items - kitchen utensils, knives, cookware, sheets, etc.

I don't know the guy but my cousin is a very down-to-earth, free-spirit kind of girl. This is a girl who went to live in South America a few years ago to teach kids in some poverty-stricken area. I totally don't see her as the type to want a $500 clock. I'm very curious to see what the wedding is like.

That thing is fugly! She must be nuts. I wouldn't even want to hang that clock - and it should be no more than about $10 by the looks of it. Isn't $500 a little pricey for wedding presents?? Maybe I'm just hanging out in different circles, lol.

Well, it is certainly way too much for a clock.

I don't think it is too much for a registry gift because often multiple people go in together to buy a larger gift. When my best friend got married, 3 couples went in together to buy their cookware set. I can see the appeal of getting a smaller number of nice presents rather than a whole slew of picture frames and candy dishes.

There was $1500 item on a list that a friend mine attending a few years back. I cannot remember what the item was, but the issue became that he was the last one to choose an item, he delayed, forgot whatever.. And felt obligated to buy it. If someone did that to me I wouldn't attend the wedding and they would get.. hmmm. nothing!

Wow. How ridiculous. Why couldn't he have just bought them a gift certificate or something in a certain amount (say $50) to that store instead? He must be nuts to do that.

That's insane. What the heck was he thinking? A bridal registry is not a demand or a requirement. It is a suggestion. You don't have to buy something on the list and you certainly don't have to spend beyond your budget in order to get something from the registry. What he should have done was write a check or buy a nice gift within his budget. He could have used the registry as a guide to the type of things the couple liked.

Well unfortunately he was a fairly good friend of the grooms, and he was not all that familiar with the customs. I think it is insane that he spent so much, but face is very important, so... whatever... This was not a run of the mill wedding, it was fairly elaborate and very expensive with some fairly well of guests, so... I don't know , I forget the whole story behind it, but I thought it was just insane.

I agree... but... well what's done is done.

My cousin registered for a $900 deepfreeze. Her office of 31 co-workers all went together and got it for her. So, they may be thinking along that line.
