Very true. But in many countries, the mass transit systems are much better. Fortunately the commuter train is convenient for me, but most people I know have no other way to get to work or school but drive.

I car pool to work 4 days a week. Usually I drive one when I have something to do right after work. Means I have to get up much earlier than I really want o go to the gym before work as my car pooler likes to get to work around 7 am. He likes to drive and we split the parking costs. We drive 7 miles which is not a lot but we cross two levees so it is kind of necessary. My gas costs have dropped to about 70 dollars a month now, filling it up only 2.5 times. And my costs for parking have dropped by half. My previous budget was 250 for gas and parking but now it is about 150. Saving me 100 per month is really nice!

Gas prices right now averages between 245 and 275.

No worries. From the posts I am assuming that most of you are based in the US. So theres no confusion when ever I post numbers I convert . Litres in gallons, metres in feet, $A into $US.
Also I don't think it is true that countries with higher petrol prices have better public transport systems. Some have good transport because if everyone drove a car to work, school whereever the pollution levels would be dangerous and no one would be able to get any where as there would just be one huge traffic jam.
How much you pay for petrol depends a lot on how big a car you drive. If you like driving big 4wds and other types of trucks you have to pay for it.

I happen to live in a country where petrol prices are high but the public transportation system is wonderful--it is comfortable, (comparatively) cheap and extensive. This is definitely not the case in most of the world. I used to live in Kuala Lumpur where public buses were cheap, but very hot, crowded, and uncomfortable. On the other hand, I was in Seattle last year where I marvelled at the fact that the buses had HUGE comfortable seats and could carry bicycles on a rack in front for people who wanted to cycle somewhere and then take the bus home. I grew up near Seattle so I understand why most people do not use the bus--it's not as convenient as a car. But, honestly, American buses are so nice I don't think it would be much of a hardship.
