  • Need camera advice please!

    Hello everyone.
Being the most indecisive person you'll ever meet, I was hoping you guys could give me some advice.

This past weekend, I was out shopping for a new camera. I narrowed it down to two cameras that I was debating over; the Sony W220 12mp and the Canon 1200IS 10mp. Aesthetically, the Sony looks nicer and has a larger lcd and is cheaper by 40 dollars. BUT, the Canon has noticeably better picture quality but has a smaller LCD.

So which one would you guys choose? Would you pay an extra 40 bucks for slightly better picture quality and a smaller LCD? Or go for the Sony that superficially looks nicer and is cheaper? Thanks in advance!

I would take the canon. I've always used canon and they always proved to be reliable. See what other say

I swear by my Canon XTI, but have never used their point-and-shoot's -- I've always preferred Fuji for point-and-shoot. In general, though, Canon makes a VERY good product. In contrast, I've never been a fan of Sony's cameras, but I've never used them extensively either.

For point-and-shoot cameras like you're looking at here, photo quality and ease of use are usually the two most important factors. Test them both out (I mean actually feel them in your hand and play with them), and see which one you like. Test out all of the menus, and how easy/common-sense they are to navigate through. Take a few test photos with each, then in playback mode, zoom in as far as possible. Look for which one shows you the best detail.

There are a number of review sites out there, they should be very helpful. Amazon, CNet, or DPReview all give pretty good reviews. DPReview.com has the most in-depth and well-written reviews, I'd recommend them first.

I bought a Canon a few months ago and have never looked back. It's an awesome camera and it was under $200. I have been very pleased.

I would suggest checking out DPreview.com. They have alot of information on almost all digital cameras.

          Sony DSC220

          Canon SD1200IS

I think picture quality is the main thing here right? Canon.

Everything I have has to be ruggedized, or else I destroy it. I have a Olympus Stylus 1030SW: shock, water, freeze, and crushproof! Looks like a normal camera, and I enjoy dropping it into the pool and watching people gasp.

Picture quality's not too bad either (10MP)

Here's Cnet's recommendation for best budget cameras (last updated on April 30th, 2009).

I think it might say something that 5 of those 9 recommendations belong to Canon. The rest are 1 Sony, 1 Pentax, and surprisingly enough, 2 Kodaks.

I think other brands have good cameras as well, but as a general rule, you almost can't go wrong with Canons. I have one myself and have been quite happy with it.

I have a pre digital canon that I love. I bought a PowerShot camera almost 5 years ago...still ticking. I bought my daughter an upgraded Powershot Canon for her birthday. Both are working great.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with your purchase!

I use Sony W220B,the main reason for the purchase was to get a bigger screen and for an improved range of features. And the new features are what makes this camera stand out. Shoot in the `P Mode' and you will get Continuous Shooting, Exposure Bracketing and `Steady Shot' Image Stabilisation, all found on the bigger SLR cameras. I will definitely recommend you to buy Sony W220B.
